Can I transport waste from a pet owner's home back to the veterinary practice or from a small branch to my main site ready for collection by CPC?

Transporting Pet Cadavers
With regards to cadavers, a pet carcass is not controlled waste as it has been excluded by virtue from the revised Waste Framework Directive 2(2)(c). If you are carrying only pet carcasses produced by yourself you are not required to register as a waste carrier.

Transporting Veterinary Waste
From January 2014, if you intend on regularly transporting other types of veterinary waste (for example clinical waste or sharps) produced during the course of treating a pet, you will need to register as a Lower Tier Waste Carrier.

To register as a Lower Tier Waste Carrier click here: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/sectors/143810.aspx. Registration is free and you should only need to register once.

With respect to ADR Regulations, according to the Department for Transport, approved derogation 17, a car or car derived van may carry up to 15kgs of UN3291 clinical waste in an UN approved rigid container and a small sharps container without the provision of ADR (Carriage of Dangerous Goods).

Seeking Advice
It is advised that you consult with your local Environment Agency and Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (DEFRA) regarding your specific circumstances for up-to-date guidance and to ensure that all current controls are met.

I have an item that I need to store in the freezer. How do I ensure that this object is not disposed of?

All items that you do not wish CPC to collect should be placed into a Non-collection (Red) bag and secured with a cable tie. Non-collection (Red) bags indicate to our driver that these items are not to be collected when performing scheduled collections. Non-collection (Red) bags can be ordered by clicking here.

At no time should the item be placed into any other bag or container. A container with a ‘do not take label’ affixed, marked with red pen, or with a red bag wrapped around the outside will not guarantee that the item will not be taken in error.
