Why should I securely dispose of confidential data?
Data theft, the ‘invisible’ crime, is on the increase. Your practice could be harmed if personal or sensitive information falls into the wrong hands.
Under the Data Protection Act 2018, companies are responsible for the security of personal information. The safe and secure destruction of data, which could identify a living individual, is a legal requirement. Failure to comply is a criminal offence.
How do I dispose of confidential waste?
Confidential data should be placed into confidential waste bags supplied by CPC. To order confidential waste bags please click here. Once full, secure it with a locking cable tie, enter onto the Waste Transfer Note and place in your storage area ready for CPC to collect.
What can be disposed of in a confidential waste bag?
The following items, for example, can be disposed of in a confidential waste bag: invoices, customer and patient records, bank statements, correspondence and any other confidential records.
Please do not place any of the following items into a confidential waste bag: clinical/ offensive waste, domestic waste, x-ray films, sharps, microfilm/ fiche or CD’s/ DVD’s.
How do I know my confidential material is securely destroyed?
Confidential material that is collected in secured confidential waste bags is destroyed on the day it arrives at our processing depot. The confidential material is first rotoclaved which uses steam under pressure to rotate the material turning it into a pulp. This pulp is then shredded beyond recognition.
